Junior Club Championships at the TPC

This weekend the Junior Club Championships took place at the TPC. The weather was beautiful, the tennis was great, and the sportsmanship was absolutely something to write home about. I have never seen a whole tournament run without any drama or complaints from the competitors. No bad line calls, no taunting or racket smashing, no inappropriate celebrating or anything else. There was nothing but good clean competition, with gracious behavior by absolutely everyone. It was a joy to see.

There were many notable performances including a nail biter between 7 year old Spencer Leung and David Tierney. At 6 all it seemed the match could go either way when David turned on the boosters to close out the match at 8-6. David went on to finish runner up to a dominant John Davis Potter who took the boys 10s title with a well earned 6-3, 6-2 victory over David.

Due to a lack of young ladies in the draw, Olivia Rosenlund was forced to play up a division, and she handled herself beautifully against the likes of impressive athletes like Ella Wang and Caroline Marlowe. Devon Cusack dominated the girls 12s division without losing a single game, despite some truly beautiful tennis played by her main competitor Sophia Perozzi.

The boys 12s division had some very competitive play. Jack Eilers played the best tennis of his career to down Kaelin Stock who went on to win the backdraw. Jack eventually met his match in the finals where Sam Seifer proved to have too much in the arsenal for him to handle. Sam took the Title 6-3, 6-0.

Perhaps the most extraordinary match of the Tournament was the Boys 14s final between 1 seed Bennett Canady and 2 seed Tyler Warren. The play was excellent with Bennett showing comfort from all areas of the court and Tyler generating loads of pace off both sides. Bennett won the first 6-4 making excellent use of his net game and keeping Tyler as deep as possible. Tyler never looked shaken though, he was a model of focus and determination. He showed extraordinary grace under pressure to win a 75 minute second set 6-4. The super breaker could have gone either way, but in the end Tyler’s clarity of focus and determination was just too much for Bennett who accepted the loss with some real maturity.

The Junior Club Champions are as follows:
Girls 12 Devon Cusack
Girls 14 Sara Tierney
Girls 16 Christina Canady
Boys 10 John Davis Potter
Boys 12 Sam Seifer
Boys 14 Tyler Warren

Thanks to everyone who participated.
